Salary calculator: gross to net
What's a Spanish salary really worth? Enter the gross figure from a job offer (still looking for one?) and see your take-home pay, and how it changes from region to region.
How your salary becomes take-home pay
Two things come off a Spanish salary. Social security is a fixed percentage of your pay, up to a ceiling. Income tax (IRPF) is progressive, and it's split into a state half and a regional half, each with its own rates. That's why the same salary pays differently in Madrid and in Cataluña.
Before the rates apply, your taxable income is reduced: by your social security, a standard €2,000 for work expenses, an extra reduction for lower earners, and a tax-free personal allowance (more if you have children).
Why doesn't my payslip match exactly?
Your employer withholds tax each month using an estimate of the whole year. This calculator works out the tax you actually owe for the year. Any difference is settled in your annual tax return (la renta) the following spring.
Does 12 or 14 payments change how much I earn?
No. The yearly total is the same; 14 payments just means smaller monthly payslips plus two extra ones.
What isn't included?
Other income (rent, savings, investments), regional deductions such as rent or childcare credits, disability and age allowances, joint filing, and the special regimes in País Vasco and Navarra. If you've just moved to Spain, you may also qualify for the Beckham law regime, which is calculated differently.
